History

Early Years

In EYFS, the children begin learning about history when they talk about past events in their living memory. We encourage them to talk about things that they can remember from their past. We base our learning Based on the requirements of the EYFS framework and guided by Development Matters, In EYFS, we also commemorate certain days including Bonfire Night, Remembrance Day and … so that the children can begin learning about events that happened in the past.

Curriculum Design and Progression

We aim to ensure pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world by inspiring pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past.

In KS1, the children will study 2 units of history. unit focus on developing historical skills and awareness of the past. They will learn about significant figures, key events and their local history. In KS2, the children will study 3 units of history per year, which are linked either to World History or British History. Our units are in chronological order so that pupils have a good understanding of when events took place and so that they can make links between different periods of time and civilisations. In both LKS2 and UKS2, children also have lessons based on local history and how particular events helped shape their local area.

All topics have been sequenced to support the pupils learning and every topic comes with a knowledge organiser containing key facts, vocabulary and illustrations that the children refer to throughout the unit. Each lesson begins with a review quiz to revisit the previous lessons and learning and at the end of each topic, the children will either complete an end of unit quiz or a longer piece of writing to evidence what they have learnt.

Reach Curriculum

At St Aloysius, our scheme is designed to enable children to ‘think like a historian’ through chronological understanding, historical enquiry, knowledge and interpretation, cause and consequence. We provide children will a mixture of information and sources that they can be inquisitive, ask questions and deepen their understanding.

Trips and Experiences

We understand that trips and experiential learning is vital to a child’s understanding and development of knowledge. We ensure that themed days are planned into the curriculum, as well as school trips and in school workshops. When learning about local history, we have visitors and we visit places within our local area to deepen our understanding.

We also collaborate with Knowsley Library Loan Services, as they allow the children to access different artefacts that enriches the children’s learning experiences.

Assessment and Monitoring

Teachers assess children at the end of each unit through either a quiz or a longer piece of writing. These assessments allow the teachers to know if their children have learnt and remembered what was intended. Assessment data is submitted electronically by the class teacher and monitored by the Subject Leader. This data is essential for the Subject Leader and SLT to ensure that history is being taught successfully within our school.
