Norovirus Advice from Public Health

Norovirus advice

Public Health professionals in Knowsley have received a number of reports relating to a viral tummy bug, called Norovirus.  This can spread quickly and easily between pupils and staff.  The symptoms include diarrhoea and vomiting.

You can help to reduce the impact of this infection by following the advice below:-

  • Norovirus is spread by close contact with someone who is being sick or who has diarrhoea.  Children and staff displaying the symptoms should keep away from other people as they may pass on the infection.  You can remain infectious for up to 48 hours after your last episode of diarrhoea or vomiting.
  • Thorough handwashing with liquid soap and water should be maintained – especially after using the toilet.
  • It is essential that bleach solution is used for environmental cleaning.
  • People with viral tummy bugs should not prepare food for others and should stay well away from food preparation areas.  This applies for 48 hours after the symptoms have gone away.
