Chinese New Year!

This week in Reception we have been celebrating Chinese New Year.

We have really enjoyed learning all about this festival and about how Chinese people celebrate this special occasion.  First we learnt all about China, looking at the different clothes, culture and even music! We enjoyed looking at some

non-fiction books all about China and the special celebration. We spotted China on a map when looking in the book and we learnt that the China flag is red with stars.

We listened to the story of the Chinese zodiac and how the years were named after the animals. Alfie told us that this is the year of the goat / sheep as the head of the animal looks like a goat but the body is like a sheep! We used animal masks to act out the race and even made some special rosettes for each animal. Cayden played the part of the rat, he came first! He was proud to wear the

number 1 rosette.

In class we have been very busy in the Chinese Restaurant and we have enjoyed making lots of Chinese food, dressing in traditional

Chinese clothing and writing menu’s for our restaurant. Warren told us that he went to a Chinese restaurant and ate sui mai! Mmm yummy! For our snack we have enjoyed tasting some Chinese foods, we have had spring rolls, duck parcels, prawn crackers and

different sauces. Lucia, Kane and Olivia really enjoyed the prawn crackers and sweet chilli sauce! Miley enjoyed the spring rolls, Miley told us “I can eat Chinese food in my country too!”

Zac found a picture of a Chinese dragon in a craft book, he decided that he would like to make one!  We went to the hall to practise

Chinese dragon dancing, Zac’s dragon was a very good dancer!

We watched a film all about Chinese New Year and watched some

Children having lots of fun doing special ribbon dancing, some of us tried this in class and our teachers were really impressed!

We have  been very busy making beautiful dragon masks, pictures and puppets. We have even made some traditional Chinese Lanterns.
